September, Possibly the Best Month in Cornwall?

10 September 2024

St Ives September Festival

Why do we say that, well with kids back at school and the holiday season a little quieter it can be a lovely time to explore Cornwall. That autumn light is coming to the fore, with golden evenings and stolen sunny days. Even if the air is a little cooler all the more reason to snuggle in to a favourite pub and reward yourself after a beautiful coastal walk with a hot chocolate, local pint or portion of chips!

So what would we recommend in Cornwall for September? Here are a few suggestions…

The Festivals and Events
St Ives have their September Festival and it brings a real buzz to the coastal town. Live music, theatre, art and poetry, it’s a cultural event that is enjoyed by locals and holiday makers alike.

Other fab events to partake of are the Little Orchard Cider and Music Festival, Newquay’s Beer Festival, and Penzance’s Food Festival to name a few.

Visit Towns and Fishing Villages
Places that might be a little crowded in August are now much more gentile, with a walk round Padstow harbour, beautiful Mousehole or popular Port Isaac all the more idyllic.

A Day at the Beach
The sea is actually a good temperature in September, after having the summer sun’s warmth, so this month is great for a paddle and a splash. Paddle boarding, kayaking or a spot of wild swimming, there is no end of water activities to enjoy. Plus a lot of the delicious beach side eateries like award winning cafes and restaurants are still very much open, serving their treats in sought-after locations.

Doggies Welcome
Lots of the beaches lift their dog bans in September which can be great news for our fury friends. Beaches like Kynance Cove, Porthcurno, Praa Sands, making a trip to the beach a complete family affair.

Surfs Up
Summer isn’t actually the best time to surf in Cornwall, autumn and winter bring better waves especially on the North Coast. With the warmer sea and more space to ride that wave, September is a brilliant month for surfing.

Walking
Sometimes the sun can be too hot or the rain too wet for coastal walks, September strikes the perfect balance. With miles and miles of coastal paths or charming circular routes, we love walking this time of year.
